Production Notes

Private Lives is a 1930 comedy taking place in three acts by award winning playwright and composer Noël Coward. It focuses on a divorced couple who, while honeymooning with their new spouses, discover that they are staying in adjacent rooms at the same hotel. Despite a perpetually stormy relationship, they realize that they still have feelings for each other. Coward wrote one of his most popular songs, "Some Day I'll Find You", for the play.

Directed by Jonathan Kent and designed by Anthony Ward, Private Lives transferred to the West End’s Gielgud Theatre following a sell-out run at Chichester Festival Theatre.

“Toby Stephens and Anna Chancellor are irresistibly well-matched” (Metro) as glamorous divorcées Elyot and Amanda whose love for one another is unexpectedly rekindled when they take adjoining suites of a French hotel while honeymooning with their new spouses five years later.

“Their chemistry proves spectacularly combustible” (the Daily Telegraph) in this “scintillating and sexy revival” (The Mail on Sunday). This chance encounter instantly reignites their passion, and they fling themselves headlong into a whirlwind of love and lust once more, without a thought for their new partners “played with distinction” (The Daily Telegraph) by Anthony Calf and Anna-Louise Plowman.

Private Lives was produced in the West End by CFT Enterprises, Old Vic Productions, Duncan C. Weldon and APT Productions.
